2025 Rosehill Guineas Results: Broadsiding Narrow Winner over Aeliana

The Rosehill Guineas 2025 results at Rosehill on Saturday narrowly went the way of the punters with the James Cummings trained Broadsiding just beating home Aeliana in a Golden Slipper Day thriller for the ages.

The gun Godolphin raced Too Darn Hot colt celebrated his fourth elite level victory atoning for a lead-up second in the Randwick Guineas to just salute for favourite backers in this year’s Group 1 $750,000 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Continuing his lovely record at the Rosehill track, the now very valuable stallion prospect was given a confident ride from barrier 9 (of 11) by master jockey James McDonald to hold out Chris Waller‘s eye-catching filly Aeliana (2nd) and the consistent Team Hawkes trained Swiftfalcon (3rd) right on the line.

“He’s a class colt and class carries a long way,” Cummings told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“I suppose from the draw, he’s had to do a fair bit of work, and James just rode him with confidence and stuck to his plan, which was essentially to keep an open mind and not give away too much ground today on a track like this.

“But that filly, who’s been so good, and James knows well, Aeliana has just laid away and done no work, they can launch at you, and it takes a very good horse to hold them off.

“He’s a really important horse for our business. He’s got a lot of his father in him, and Too Darn Hot would be an incredibly popular sire if he was coming back.

“So, there’s a lot to be said for having a colt as classy as Broadsiding ready to take his place on the roster one day.

Having settled midfield in the run, Broadsiding ($2.90F) really let down on the home straight reeling in the front running VRC Derby winner Goldrush Guru to hit the lead with 200m to go.

Swiftfalcon ($3.90), third in the Randwick Guineas the start prior, went with the well-backed favourite while Aeliana ($5.50) flashed home late looking to beat home the boys.

The flying filly, fourth in the Randwick Guineas in the lead-up, lunged and looked to have stolen the show.

But the photo revealed the brave Broadisiding had incredibly held on for the win forcing Aeliana to settle for second again after her Group 1 Thousand Guineas second placing in the spring.

“It was one of those moments where you’re doomed if you do and doomed if you don’t, so we rolled the dice, had a crack, paid off, but like James said, there was no real plan, just go with the flow,” winning hoop McDonald said.

“At the first bend, I thought, oh no, then one worked out, I ended up with a 1-1, and it was a good win, a really good win.

“It was nice to get the photo, the horse deserves it, he’s a really great colt, he’s done a marvellous job.

“Yeah, he’s done a marvellous job today, and yeah, proud of him, he’s run the 2,000 out, brilliant.”

Adding further merit to the win was the fact Cummings said the 2000m Rosehill Guineas trip was probably not ideal for the horse.

“You know, he’s probably not a genuine 2,000-metre horse, but he’s a brilliant horse, and he’s got up and won the Rosehill Guineas, so fair play to him,” he said.

“He’s probably done it the hard way, and his performance is worth reflecting on.

“So, before I go and rule him out of other 2,000-metre races in the future, I think it’s worthwhile saying, so it’s a great credit to him.

“He’s got another Group 1 on the board. It’s very difficult to do on a warm day and these conditions, but he’s just a good horse, and it’s just so pleasing to see him get up and deliver.

“Today was something of an audition for Broadsiding, and it gives us a good guide as to exactly where we want to go with him in the future.

“But there’s plenty of desire there to be still here on the track, fighting out these finishes.

“I thought he was good in the Randwick Guineas last time, and he showed that he’s been brought on by that run in being able to do so much work and hold on to that victory today.”
