Glenlogan Park Stakes 2017 Results: Eckstein Beats the Mares

Kurt Goldman’s up-and-coming filly Eckstein beat home the older mares in a nice effort second-up at Eagle Farm Racecourse winning the 2017 Glenlogan Park Stakes on way to bigger and better winter targets.

The often temperamental three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible relished a notable drop in weight after carrying 60kg for a brave fourth behind Miss Debutante at Scone a fortnight back in the Listed Denises Joy Stakes (1100m).

She retained an undefeated Eagle Farm record on Kingsford-Smith Cup Day, charging home in the $150,000 Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1300m) where she carried just 54.5kg after a beautiful run.

Jockey Corey Brown replaced Mitchell Bell aboard the youngster whose other Eagle Farm start produced a Listed Mode Plate (1200m) victory over Candika back in December.

Third in the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast in the summer, Eckstein continued her rise through the ranks with her Group 3 win on a Heavy (8) track.

“She had an ideal run today,” winning hoop Brown said after the race.

“She drew the inside, which wasn’t ideal, but she skipped back to the inside after straightening.

“It was a very good win under those testing conditions.”

Her Goulburn-based trainer was confident she’d get through the going and Eckstein didn’t disappoint, travelling strongly throughout the set weights plus penalties clash.

“She really relaxed, which was great to see,” Goldman said.

“She was very well behaved today, a completely different horse to Scone the other week.

“She’s coming around…she’s not an easy horse to ride. She’s quite a handful.”

Jumping from the inside alley Eckstein settled just off the pace set by her last start conqueror Miss Debutante.

Into the straight it was I Am Zelady hitting the front as plenty of others were making up ground to challenge including the Bjorn Baker-trained Egyptian Symbol.

In the end it was Brown and Eckstein on the inside winning by a neck after a perfectly-timed ride, while the Kevin Kemp-trained Collate four-year-old from Toowoomba Sold For Song ran on well for third.

Goldman now sticks to his Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival program taking Eckstein to the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight before an elite level test on June 24 in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

“The plan was always to go to the Dane Ripper into the Tiara,” he said.

“It was good to see what she did today on a testing track.

“Okay, she might have had a soft run and probably had a few favours, but she still toughed it out well.

“So I think we’ll stick to that plan. It seems like the logical thing from here.”

Cosmic Endeavour (2014) was the last filly to beat home the older mares at Eagle Farm in the Tattersall’s Tiara.
