Winx has is still out to $1.20 to blitz her Flemington debut this afternoon making it 21 wins on the trot in the Turnbull Stakes 2017 with the unknown rival remaining the market mover.
Earlier in the week Chris Waller’s superlative daughter of Street Cry was only $1.12 in markets for her shot at a 14th elite level title in the Group 1 $500,000 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).
It’s true the world-class six-year-old is yet to officially race at the Flemington track, but she is a freak of the turf and her lead-up work at Headquarters has put most doubters to bed.
Winx is still holding around 95% of the bets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $1.20 in the latest Turnbull Stakes odds to continue her winning streak, which has been as good for Australian racing as it has been for her lucky connections.
The genuine Turnbull Stakes betting market mover though is the Darren Weir-trained Humidor ($5 into $4.80) who comes up against the illustrious Winx for the first time.
There is no doubting the class and ability of this Teofilo five-year-old who is also something of a Flemington specialists boasting two Group 1 victories at the track.
He was outstanding last start thrashing Hartnell (2nd) and Black Heart Bart (3rd) by over three lengths in the Makybe Diva Stakes at a mile and will be even more effective up over his pet distance (4-3-1-0).
Still it really is hard to see the Winx fairy tale ending this afternoon, making Humidor best for a Place Bet.
She is an equine athlete that has, this preparation alone, overcome missed jumps and chasing down tearaway leaders.
Waller is supremely proud of all Winx has done so far, and why wouldn’t he be?
She has already amassed over $13.4 million in prize money and if successful today and in joining Kingston Town with a trio of Cox Plate trophies next start, she will surpass the current Australian prize money record currently held by triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva ($14,526,685).
Waller also doesn’t think Winx is done just yet and is confident heading into her Turnbull Stakes Day test.
“Winx is just a natural athlete and seems to get herself out of problems so, whether she is back, forward or wide she copes with all situations. It’s as if she wants to be a winner,” Waller told the Herald Sun.
There has also been a tickle of money in the Turnbull Stakes markets for Assign ($71 into $51) and stablemate Sir Isaac Newton ($51 into $41) to finish in the money.
The Lloyd Williams-owned duo are prepared by Robert Hickmott who trained previous Turnbull Stakes winners Green Moon (2012) and Zipping (2010).
Assign has had four Flemington runs without a top three finish, but his 2000m form is strong and he won over the distance most recently in late March at Rosehill saluting on a Heavy (9) track in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m).
The seven-year-old is out to atone for a second last (14th) at Caulfield first-up in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) when five and a half-lengths beaten under 59.5kg and will appreciate the weight relief today coming back to 56.5kg.
Sir Isaac Newton is even better weighted with only 54.5kg giving the Galileo six-year-old the chance to improve sharply on his sixth behind Caulfield Cup-bound Harlem in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) a fortnight ago.
