The spring’s top three-year-old sprinters run down the famous Flemington straight six in Saturday’s Coolmore Stud Stakes 2017, betting tips and updated odds on the VRC Derby Day Group 1 detailed below.
A bumper 20 youngsters face off in this spring’s Group 1 $1 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and the bookies are struggling to find a clear favourite in the markets.
There are only four under double-figures in the latest Coolmore Stud Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the current $7.50 favourite drawn the rails and undefeated is the James Cummings-trained Viridine.
He’s out to frank the Sydney lead-up form in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), which he won on October 7 by two lengths, and if he handles the straight he can probably do just that.
The next best in Coolmore Stud Stakes betting include the Blue Diamond winner Catchy ($8.50) who is down from the mile when third in the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas, the in-form Eptimum ($9) chasing a fourth straight win after a three length romp home at The Valley last start and impressive Golden Rose winner Trapeze Artist ($9.50) out wide.
History shows the Coolmore Stud Stakes results have been dominated by the favourites in the past 20 years.
Will that be the case this year or is there an upset Coolmore Stud Stakes 2017 result pending from one of the sprinters further down the markets including Blue Sapphire Stakes winner and runner-up respectively Formality ($13) and Jukebox ($12)?
1st
#5 Viridine ($7.50)
From 2006-16 six favourites have saluted for the Coolmore Stud Stakes punters and finding this year’s top fancy from the Godolphin stables pretty hard to knock. The Poet’s Voice colt has won all four starts to date, albeit in Sydney, and debuts in Melbourne this weekend. Needs to go the other way and get down the straight, but there was plenty to like about the two length Randwick win in the Roman Consul last time out. Brenton Avdulla retains the ride and that race has produced three of the past four Coolmore Stud Stakes winners (all Waller-trained). Happy to say Viridine can frank it again in 2017 especially after the barrier one draw.
2nd
#11 Lone Eagle ($34)
Blow-out Coolmore Stud Stakes on offer for Lone Eagle, but really fancy that price when it comes to a place. Mick Price won with Flying Artie last year and has this improving Zoffany colt representing him on the weekend. Comes off a third at a similar price behind Formality and Jukebox only 1.65 lengths beaten at Caulfield on October 18. Is that the form line to follow into this? Time will tell, but he was finishing off well and ticks a number of boxes.
3rd
#10 Eptimum ($9)
Bookies are keeping this Toby Edmonds-trained Queensland safe in betting after the son of Snitzel made it three Victorian wins on the trot at The Valley last weekend. On the quick back-up and doesn’t come out of the right lead-up historically speaking, but he is flying and romped home in the Group 3 over this distance by three lengths. Needs further? Has enough to sustain the long straight so that’s a plus.
