Quezette Stakes winner Sunlight aims at Coolmore Stud Stakes

Two year old Magic Millions victor Sunlight was back in winning form with a gutsy performance to take out the Group 3 $150,000 Winslow Group Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield today.

Winning trainer Tony McEvoy said that he would keep Sunlight to a sprinting campaign during the 2018 Spring Carnival and will set the filly for the Group 2 $200,000 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 15 before lining up in the Group 1 $1m Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight again on November 3.

“She is a super star filly,” McEvoy said.

“The Coolmore is the race we want.”

“It’s still a long way off. We are not in a rush. We will probably go to the Danehill now to have a look down the straight.”

Sunlight was beaten six lengths when a first up second to Nature Strip but McEvoy wasn’t disappointed with the effort.

“We went in on a light prep into that first race but it fitted with where I wanted to go with her and knowing her as well as I do, it takes a bit of work to get her fit this girl.”

“She just blew out a little bit in Adelaide by a pretty handy horse but today the way she was in for the fight, she’s the Sunlight of old for sure.”

“She’s blown up a little and she’s only going to get better. Three-deep facing that wind and carrying the (weight) penalty. It was fabulous.”

Luke Currie had Sunlight ($4.20) in the firing line from the onset and the Zoustar filly dug deep in the straight to hold off the challengers to score a nose win over Humma ($8) with Thrillster ($17) in third position.

The $3.80 favourite Pippie raced on the pace but didn’t figure in the finish before winding up in seventh spot.
