Easy Eddie put forward an impressive first-up win at Rosehill on Saturday to claim the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m).
The four-year-old, who had plenty of wet track form to go on, was well supported at $4.50 in a strong field comprising of $2.80 favourite She Knows. Jockey Robbie Dolan found himself three-wide with no cover down the straight, but managed to chase down the speed over the final furlong to win by a nose.
After winning his first ever stakes race, backing up in next week’s $700,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) could be the move for trainer Joe Pride.
“Might run here in a weeks time in the Galaxy. Just want to see how he pulls up first” Pride said after the race.
“It was always our plan that if he ran well to potentially back him up, because he is a good back up horse, but we weren’t counting on a Heavy 10 today. I’ll be there in the morning to see how he is.”
Easy Eddie trailed well in the lead up to Saturday’s win, racing third over 807m earlier this month. All signs point towards another successful campaign after winning two races at Warwick Farm and Kensington over the New Year break.
She Knows, who ran second after being held up down the inside, was simply unlucky on the day.
“She was good, she relishes those conditions and she ran really well” beaten jockey Jay Ford said.
Fourth place-getter Trekking also struggled on the sticky surface.
