The Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival continues at Doomben on Saturday with the George Moore Stakes 2019 featuring a quality field of sprinters led in betting by the Tony Gollan-trained Outback Barbie.
Due to run as Race 8 at 5:25pm (local time), this year’s Group 3 $200,000 George Moore Stakes (1200m) has attracted a capacity 16 starters including three for top local horseman Gollan.
Gollan has dominated the recent George Moore Stakes results training three of the past four winners with Didntcostalot (2015), Most important (2016) and last year’s champion I’m A Rippa (2018).
Of the Gollan trio in this year’s George Moore Stakes field, smart Spirit Of Boom mare Outback Barbie is the one to beat currently leading betting as the easing $3 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Drawn out wide in barrier 13 with Jim Byrne booked for the ride, the four-year-old comes off a first-up win at the track from November in the Listed Keith Noud Quality (1200m).
She and Byrne won that traditional lead-up by a length with Outback Barbie carrying 54kg, a kilo less than her allocated weight for Saturday.
Outback Barbie is yet to win second-up but has an excellent record at the Doomben track (6:3-1-0) and just needs a touch of luck from the alley to be competitive again.
Gollan’s other runners are the defending champion I’m A Rippa ($8) in gate three with Jake Bayliss riding and the Kiwi-bred outsider Natch ($26) in barrier five for apprentice hoop Baylee Nothdurft.
Love Conquers All gelding I’m A Rippa won the George Moore 12 months ago carrying 56.5kg second-up after a close third in the Keith Noud.
This season the now six-year-old also ran third in the Keith Noud Quality with 59kg on his back and carries 58kg in the George Moore Stakes as he looks to go back-to-back in the race for the first time since the three-peat of Mirraben (1987-89).
Following Outback Barbie in George Moore Stakes betting this summer at $4.60 is the market mover Chapter And Verse backed in from an earlier quote of $7.50.
The Desleigh Forster-trained Rothesay five-year-old is another second-up runner out of the Keith Noud Quality having run under two lengths back fourth.
Chapter And Verse is tipped as the improver out of that race over the same track and distance in Saturday’s Group 3 drawn well in barrier two with Mark Du Plessis retaining the ride on the fast-finisher.
Despite being yet to win at the course from six runs, Forster remains confident Chapter And Verse can break his Doomben duck on the weekend.
“He won a maiden at Beaudesert and we threw him in the deep end at Doomben in a three-year-old Plate in June last year,” she told AAP this week.
“He finished second to The Bostonian who went on to win in Listed company after that.
“Of course, The Bostonian came back last winter and won two Group 1 races.
“Chapter and Verse has also finished second at Doomben to Looks Like Elvis who has raced well in the south, and fourth to Tyzone in the Group Three BRC Sprint.”
Rounding out the single-figure fancies is then the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Sydney raider Brave Song ($6.50).
Carrying the 59.5kg second top weight behind Crack Me Up (60kg), Team Snowden’s runner is looking to return to form after running eighth four times on the trot this preparation.
