Trainer Chris Waller is tipped to take out the Group 1 double at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with Verry Elleegant leading Tancred Stakes betting and her young stablemate Funstar odds-on favourite in the Vinery Stud Stakes 2020.
Last autumn Waller took out the Group 1 $500,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) with his subsequent ATC Oaks champion Verry Elleegant and she returns a year on lining-up as the punters’ pick in Saturday’s Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m).
The master horseman of Winx fame is also looking at back-to-back Vinery Stud Stakes wins with his flying filly Funstar hot favourite to take out this year’s edition of the Oaks lead-up.
Verry Elleegant won the Vinery on the back of a Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes victory and on March 14, Adelaide filly Funstar won the same lead-up.
She is now out to do the double and pays a short $1.75 in the latest Vinery Stud Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Last year’s winning hoop James McDonald partners the ultra-consistent Funstar once again, the filly having run top two in all seven of her starts including her Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) success last October.
The Vinery Stud Stakes is shaping-up as yet another thrilling clash between her and the brilliant Kiwi-trained filly Probabeel.
Probabeel was second to Funstar in the Tea Rose and Flight Stakes in the spring before turning the tables to salute in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m).
Funstar however was quick to atone, improving on the Surround Stakes second when fresh to win the Phar Lap on a Heavy (10) track with Probabeel 1.3 lengths back second.
Unsurprisingly, the Jamie Richards-trained Savabeel filly Probabeel is considered the danger occupying the second line of Vinery Stud Stakes betting at $4.
Outside of Funstar and Probabeel, who are drawn in barriers eight and six respectively, the only other contender in the 13-filly Vinery Stud Stakes field getting any love from the punters is the also Waller-trained Subpoenaed ($12).
Tommy Berry partners the Rip Van Winkle filly from barrier five as she looks to improve on a fifth when only a half-length beaten from a wide alley (14 of 15) in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) a fortnight ago.
For value further down the markets are then the likes of the Team Snowden-trained Thousand Guineas runner-up Missile Mantra ($17), Fascino ($17) to be ridden by the flying Tom Marquand out to frank the Melbourne form, and Godolphin’s widely-drawn Kembla Grange Classic winner Asiago ($19) in barrier 13.
