Open only to five-year-old horses, the $2 million showdown runs at Rosehill Gardens as part of Golden Gift Day. The meeting takes place on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup and runs on the same date as VRC Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.
Along with the now Group 3 $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds, the other feature on the card is the Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).
The Five Diamonds took place for the first time in 2022 and was added to the Sydney spring line-up at the same time as the now Listed $3 million The Big Dance (1600m), which runs on Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November each year.
The Five Diamonds officially gained Listed status in 2024 the same year Sydney’s $20 million The Everest became a Group 1 race.
In 2022 Sibaaq ran third in the first edition of The Big Dance before a second in The Five Diamonds results.
Run over 1800m, The Five Diamonds is run at set weights plus penalties and serves as a nice attraction for five-year-old horses that may otherwise have been retired.
The race also follows on from the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-olds run in the spring.
The $1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) held at Rosehill in October on the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day card is the key lead-up into the race.
Ellsberg in 2022 became the inaugural winner of the Five Diamonds Prelude – The Five Diamonds race double.
He also won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick earlier that spring.
The Five Diamonds 2022 form was franked with the third place-getter Laws Of Indices heading overseas next start to run third in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) that December.
In 2023 the Five Diamonds third placegetter Detonator Jack went on to win the lucrative $1 million The Gong race at Kembla Grange a fortnight later.
The third edition of now Listed $2 million The Five Diamonds runs on Saturday November 9, 2024 at Rosehill on the same day as Melbourne’s VRC Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

- To Win: #3 Lindermann ($9 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Wide open edition of Sydney’s Five Diamonds on Saturday but happy to stick with Chris Waller’s Group 1 winner Lindermann after his return to winning form last time out. The son of Lonhro won last year’s Rosehill Guineas but has been in the winner’s stall just twice since. Fresh he was flat in the $1.5 million Alan Brown when 15th at 30/1 from a wide alley. He atoned in the Group 3 Craven Plate (1800m) at Randwick when saluting narrowly to defeat Spirit Ridge with 59kg. He’s a three-time Rosehill winner from four starts here, presents fit and back in confidence now third-up, and the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira rides. Can win.

Race comments
Quality edition of this race. ATTRITION (1) took a while to find form but it came last start when he dug deep under siege to hold out Kovalica in the 1900m Hill Stakes at this track. That was his first try beyond a mile and he lapped it up. The one to beat again. Derby winner MAJOR BEEL (15) is being kept to shorter trips this prep. Ran a cheeky race in the Chelmsford won by Fangirl three back but has since struggled in the two elite mile races at Randwick. Back a level today and if Tim Clark can control things he might be tough to catch at a big price. LINDERMANN (3) is in the mix after he dug deep to just get home in the 1800m Craven Plate at Randwick last start. Still has room to improve at the third run back from a spell. TERRITORY EXPRESS (11) is back in fine shape and will be storming home.
