The Golden Slipper Stakes 2023 final field has been confirmed with James Cummings’ gun colt Cylinder heading betting on the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
A capacity line-up of the season’s most promising juveniles takes to the Rosehill Gardens track on Saturday for this year’s edition of the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) which is one of five elite level racings happening in Sydney this weekend.
The official 2023 Golden Slipper Stakes Barrier Draw was subsequently conducted at 11:00am (AEDT) on Tuesday morning and saw the favourites Cylinder and Learning To Fly draw ideally in gates three and four respectively.
Sitting top of the latest Golden Slipper Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au is Godolphin’s in-form son of Exceed And Excel Cylinder who is after his third win on the trot.
After back-to-back seconds in November, including behind subsequent Blue Diamond Stakes champion Little Brose in Caulfield’s Merson Cooper Stakes, Cylinder is undefeated this prep heading into his Slipper assignment.
First-up he won the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at the Rosehill track before a last start victory over Red Resistance on March 4 at Randwick in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m).
He is now out to complete the Todman Stakes – Golden Slipper double for the first time since Farnan (2020) and hand Cummings with a second Slipper trophy to add to that he won in 2019 with the filly Kiamichi.
Cylinder will be ridden by the in-form James McDonald.
The big challenger and one-time favourite in Golden Slipper Stakes betting is Annabel Neasham’s star filly Learning To Fly looking to retain her unbeaten record on Saturday.
The brilliant young daughter of Justify has won all three of her starts having debut with a Group 3 Widden Stakes victory at Rosehill in late January.
She went on to secure the lucrative $2 million Inglis Millennium at Randwick next up before her ideal lead-up when narrowly saluting as the odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m).
Chad Schofield continues associations on the airborne filly who is looking to do the Reisling – Slipper double for the first time since Estijaab (2018).
Team Snowden are looking to add a third trophy to the family’s cabinet when they saddle-up the progressive I Am Invincible colt King’s Gambit in this season’s race.
King’s Gambit was successful on debut at Caulfield last October winning the Debutant Stakes by a runaway five length margin and is after his first win since.
This time in he’s been knocking on the door when second to Red Resistance fresh as the beaten short priced favourite in the Group 3 Canonbury before a lead-up third to Cylinder when under a length beaten in the Silver Slipper.
He has been brought on fitness wise with a winning Randwick trial on March 7 and brings in the right form lines to challenge at a backable price with Mark Zahra in the saddle.
Peter & Paul Snowden saddle-up three in this year’s Slipper line-up.
There other standout hopeful this autumn is Extreme Choice colt Don Corleone who is out to frank the Melbourne form coming off a one-length second in the Blue Diamond Stakes from February 25.
The Snowden’s contingent is completed by Empire Of Japan coming off a Todman fourth.
Red Resistance of course is also being kept safe in betting with the nicely-bred Russian Revolution colt lining-up for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott with Brett Prebble to ride.
Co-trainer Waterhouse has prepared an incredible seven previous Golden Slipper winners including most recently Farnan (2020) in partnership with Bott.
They saddle-up a livewire hope again in 2023 with Red Resistance undefeated at Rosehill having beaten Steel City at the track on debut in mid-January before his Canonbury Stakes win second-up.
He had his latest run on March 4 in the Todman and was eye-catching when a half-length off Cylinder, and he is sure to appreciate returning to Rosehill for the big one.
The ace training duo of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace meanwhile hunt for their first Golden Slipper triumph and have Victorian raider Steel City right up there in betting.
The Merchant Navy filly, to be ridden by Regan Bayliss, has her fifth start in the Group 1 and has form around Learning To Fly having finished second to her in the Widden Stakes second-up.
She was unplaced when she went south for a 12th in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), but was quick to atone back at Rosehill with her dominant 2.66 length win over Blanc De Blanc in last Saturday’s Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).
One of the few proven over the Golden Slipper Stakes track and distance Steel City was huge in the Magic Night Stakes, but the double has been done just once since Bint Marscay back in 1993 by Kiamichi in 2019.
Other standouts in the Golden Slipper field this season include the Chris Waller-trained Shinzo who is on the quick back-up off his Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes victory, Waller’s Capitalist filly Lazzago coming off a Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes win, and Ben & JD Hayes’ Blue Diamond Stakes champ Little Brose chasing the interstate Group 1 double donning the No. 1 saddlecloth.
