The James Cummings-trained Cylinder is tipped to frank the Golden Slipper form and go one better than his second in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds when he lines-up as favourite in Saturday’s 2023 Inglis Sires’.
The Group 1 $1 million Inglis Sires’ (1400m) for the juveniles is one of four elite level races taking place at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships this weekend.
Heading Inglis Sires’ betting online at $2.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au is the consistent Godolphin-raced Exceed And Excel colt Cylinder.
He was excellent winning the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) – Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) double first and second-up this prep before a last start second to Shinzo at Rosehill in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 18.
Jockey James McDonald continues associations here with Cylinder tipped to improver up to 1400m here rock-hard fit and ready to fire from barrier 4 of 13 on Saturday.
Cummings has won two of the past four editions of the Inglis Sires’ with Microphone (2019) and Anamoe (2021), and he looks in with a huge hope with Cylinder out to salute for the punters in 2023.
The challenge looks set to come from fellow Golden Slipper graduate Don Corleone who ran an eye-catching fourth in the $5 million showdown last time out.
Saturday sees the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Extreme Choice colt look to return to winning form since his successful debut at the Randwick track back in January.
He has risen through the grades quickly finishing runner-up to Little Brose in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at just his third start before the big Slipper run.
Hugh Bowman retains the ride in the Sires’ with Don Corleone rated a $4.80 chance from barrier two.
Co-trainer Peter Snowden has prepared an impressive five previous Inglis Sires’ winners including two in partnership with his son Paul with Invader (2017) and King’s Legacy (2020).
Along with Don Corleone Team Snowden also saddle-up Snitzel colt Empire Of Japan from barrier 11 this weekend with Zac Purton aboard the $9 shot who comes off a fifth in the Slipper at 80/1.
There is a logjam of chances at the top-end of the markets with a further two juveniles also installed at Inglis Sires’ odds of $9 with the undefeated Veight in the outside alley and Brave Mead.
Tony & Calvin McEvoy saddle-up Grunt colt Veight who has his third start in the feature coming in unbeaten off back-to-back victories in Melbourne.
His latest run was on March 11 at Flemington where he impressed with a two-length romp home in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) ahead of his trip north.
No horse has completed the interstate VRC Sires’ – Inglis Sires’ double without a run in between since Keepers (1983).
Brave Mead meanwhile represents Ciaron Maher & David Eustace who chase their first win in the second leg of the 2YO Triple Crown.
The talented son of Brave Smash is after his third win on the trot making his Group race debut on Saturday on the back of a nearly three-length Listed win over 1200m at Moonee Valley on William Reid Stakes Night.
Also being kept safe in the markets are the likes of Group 2 Pago Pago runner-up behind Shinzo last start Maharba ($13) and John O’Shea’s Todman fifth place-getter Café Millenium ($13).
