The Group 2 $400,000 Brisbane Cup (3200m) has drawn a small but competitive field of 11 led in betting by a horse proven at the distance, Harzand five-year-old Mostly Cloudy.

The import has winning form up to 3318m in Europe but has won just once down under.

He has been racing competitively this prep including a sixth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and last start Flemington second a half-length off The Map in the Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m) on May 18.

Mostly Cloudy had a heft 58.5kg that day and will relish the drop back to 55kg (likely to carry 56kg) in the Brisbane Cup weights.

The in-form Blake Shinn is enjoying a stellar Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival to date and has the ride on the Brisbane Cup favourite ($2.60) from a good gate four draw this weekend.

The danger occupying the second line of Brisbane Cup betting at $4.50 is another dour stayer, Phillip Stokes’ evergreen veteran Amade.

The 10-year-old jumps from gate seven with 58.5kg and Daniel Stackhouse aboard.

At his latest he enjoyed a tidy win over this trip in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) a fortnight back with more weight, and he ticks plenty of boxes to keep the wins coming despite his years.

In an open affair a host of other competitors are also under $10 in the Brisbane Cup odds including the Bjorn Baker-trained Alegron ($6).

Formerly with James Cummings, the Teofilo five-year-old joined Baker earlier this year and was good last time out showing improvement here in the Premiers Cup (2400m).

Others of note include Chris Waller’s defending champion Selino who is an early market mover into $9 to become the first back-to-back Brisbane Cup winner on successive years since Fair Patton (1964-65) and Goldman ($9) coming off a Group 3 Premiers Cup third at the track a fortnight back.
