Worth $1,000,000 in prize money as of 2022, the weight for age event attracts several horses which have already competed in the weight-for-age Missile Stakes. The Premiere Stakes is held on Epsom Handicap Day and shares a race program with the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).

The Premiere Stakes now serves as a nice lead-up race for star sprinters set to return to the track and distance in a fortnight’s time for the $20 million Group 1 The Everest race.

Think About It (2023) was the last sprinter to claim the Premiere Stakes – The Everest double.

In 2020 Classique Legend ran second in the Premiere Stakes before winning The Everest, the Premiere Stakes winner Libertini improved on his The Everest eighth to run a subsequent third in Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic that Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Premiere Stakes winner is also exempt from ballot for the following year’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes held at the same track and distance during the autumn in Sydney.

The 2021 Premiere Stakes form was franked with the winner Masked Crusader running second next-up to Nature Strip in that spring’s The Everest results.

Masked Crusader returned to run third in the 2022 Premiere Stakes results won by the previous year’s fourth placegetter, Lost And Running.

The 2022 Premiere Stakes runner-up Mazu franked the form running third next-up in that year’s The Everest results before a second in the $3 million Winners Stakes (now Russell Balding Stakes) and 2023 TJ Smith Stakes third upon his return in the autumn.

The 2023 Premiere Stakes form was firmly franked by the winner Think About It who backed up to salute in The Everest before a Winners Stakes third.

The 2024 Premiere Stakes also produced that year’s The Everest winner with the mighty mare Bella Nipotina improving on her third in the Group 2 to win the first official Group 1 edition of The Everest at her next start. She further franked the form taking out that year’s $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (formerly the Winners Stakes) before a Group 1 Champions Sprint third at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The $1 million Premiere Stakes 2025 ran on Saturday October 4, 2025 as part of the bumper Epsom Handicap Day line-up of races as a key The Everest lead-up race and was won in fast finishing fashion by The Everest bound grey speedster Briasa ($2.25F).

2025 Premiere Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Premiere Stakes 2025 Tips on the key $20 million The Everest lead-up race this season.

  • To Win: No. 2 Briasa ($1.90 at time of publish) – BET NOW

BRIASA (2) is odds-on to win his final The Everest lead-up and I can’t find a reason he can’t win the Premiere Stakes and go into the world’s richest turf race a last start winner. Team Hawkes’ Group 1 winning grey is second-up and has terrific form at this stage of a prep (3:2-0-0). Fresh he was second here behind Joliestar in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) and he’ll be fitter for that run and ready to go one better relishing the step up to six-furlongs. His 1200m strike rate is nearly flawless with five wins from six starts at the distance including taking out the autumn’s TJ Smith Stakes. In this diminutive field he’s drawn to win from barrier two and regular rider Tyler Schiller sticks with. Wins.
