Bjorn Baker’s Sydney visitor Unencumbered is sure to firm in their favouritism to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2014 on the Gold Coast this weekend after coming up trumps with barrier three for the Queensland feature.
The Jeep $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) yesterday attracted a capacity field of 16 runners plus five emergencies.
Of those the clear favourite is flying Testa Rossa colt Unencumbered who has won four of their five starts to date.
The last three of those have been on the trot including the Wyong Magic Millions Classic – Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes double which the youngster completed in December.
Now a big pay day is on the cards for Unencumbered who should get the run of the race with Nathan Berry retaining the ride.
Other big winners in the Magic Millions Classic barrier draw this morning included the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sebring colt Cyclone on the rails in barrier one, Liam Birchely’s last start Ipswich winner Ruby Soho (barrier two) whose been in top form, Jason McLachlan’s Haradasun colt Divine Service (barrier four) and the undefeated Celestial Dragon in barrier five.
Stuart Kendrick’s Sunshine Coast galloper Celestial Dragon has won both of their career starts to date at Doomben and will look to keep their flawless record intact on the weekend.
Second favourite in Magic Millions Classic betting Invisible is also yet to taste defeat having won their sole start to date.
The All American colt also remains steady in the markets after a good barrier seven draw.
That’s ideal according to co-trainer Michael Hawkes who yesterday said they would love to draw between six and eight.
One inside of Invisible with barrier six was then one time favourite Oakleigh Girl whose slowly getting back in the punters’ good books.
The Danny Bougoure-trained Snitzel filly won her opening two career starts, a Group 3 on Melbourne Cup Day in Sydney and then the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes in Brisbane last month, but was fourth last start behind Unencumbered in the BJ McLachlan from the same gate she’s drawn for Saturday’s showdown.
Some of the other top fancies in the Magic Millions Classic odds meanwhile didn’t fare as well.
Mick Price’s Wyong Magic Millions Classic runner-up Geromayo is in eight, still a decent draw, but I Am The General has work to do in gate 15 and will only come into gate 12 if the five emergencies come out.
Also out wide are the likes of Price’s other runner Nordic Empire (19); BJ McLachlan runner-up Stroak (14) from the local stables of Bryan Guy and third palced Sagatona (13); Waterhouse’s Stratum filly Echo Gal (17) and Snitzel filly Sheer Style (21) who was third in Wyong’s Magic Millions two-year-old feature last start.
