  • 3rd: #2 Sir Lucan

The Newcastle Gold Cup is a Group 3 staying event held at Newcastle Racecourse in mid-September.

Raced over 2300m, the Newcastle Gold Cup presents horses with an interesting challenge and punters with a half-decent guide to the Melbourne Cup. Run under open handicap conditions, the Newcastle Gold Cup allows genuine winners to rise to the occasion and prove their staying abilities.

With $300,000 prize money as of 2023, the Newcastle Gold Cup is quite a lucrative Group 3 event. Trainers from both local stables and Sydney stables seek entry into the Newcastle Gold Cup for their higher-class stayers.

Although only holding Group 3 status the Newcastle Gold Cup attracts horses of a higher calibre; it is not unusual to see some past Group 1 winners in the Newcastle Cup field. Sometimes horses from Queensland will make the journey down south, although it is rarer for Victorian and Western Australian horses to travel for the Newcastle Gold Cup.

The Newcastle Gold Cup is held at beautiful Broadmeadow, the home of the Newcastle Jockey Club. The Newcastle Gold Cup is the headline event of the two-day Newcastle Racing Carnival. There are four other black-type events held during the Newcastle Racing Carnival, including two Group 3 events, the Cameron Handicap (1500m) and the Tibbie Stakes (1400m).

Depending on their spring campaign plans and their results in the Newcastle Gold Cup, many of the runners will continue on to major feature races during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival including Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Epson Handicap Day at Randwick.

In 2023, Spirit Ridge ran second on both the Newcastle Cup and The Metropolitan results.

The Newcastle Gold Cup winner is exempt from The Metropolitan ballot and Glencadam Gold (2012) was the last horse to do the double.

The 2023 Newcastle Gold Cup winner Military Mission finished fourth in that year’s The Metropolitan.

Green Moon (2011) won the Newcastle Gold Cup before a next-up second in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). Green Moon also went on to win the 2012 Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington.

In 2020 the Newcastle Gold Cup winner Mugatoo went on to run second in The Metropolitan and fourth in that year’s Cox Plate results in Melbourne. Mugatoo further franked the Newcastle Gold Cup form winning the $5 million The All-Star Mile first-up in 2021.

The 2022 Newcastle Gold Cup form was franked with the winner Durston going on to win that year’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in Melbourne.

Trainer Chris Waller won his sixth Newcastle Gold Cup in 10 years with Etna Rosso in 2024.

The 2024 Newcastle Gold Cup ran on Friday, September 20, 2024 as a lead-up to the Group 1 Spring Cups in Melbourne and was won in style by the progressive Etna Rosso ($3.40F) for now six-time winning trainer Chris Waller.

Stay tuned for our insider Newcastle Gold Cup 2024 Tips on the popular September showdown this spring.

  • To Win: #4 Touristic ($3.90 at time of publish) – BET NOW

The Newcastle Cup features a competitive field, but Touristic, trained by Peter Snowden, stands out as a promising contender. Despite recent second-place finishes, Touristic’s consistent performances and ability to excel in Group 3 races make him a strong candidate for victory. He’s up in weight but has a good draw and the potential to overcome his previous runner-up finishes and secure a win in the Group 3 on Friday.

2024 Newcastle Gold Cup Field

The Newcastle Gold Cup field attracts a quality line-up of second tier spring stayers each season, many coming off lead-up runs in races like the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) a fortnight earlier or Rosehill’s Listed Premiers’ Cup (1900m) the month before.

Carzoff (2018) followed by Durston (2022) are the last horses to do the Wyong Cup – Newcastle Cup double.

Military Mission (2nd in 2023) was the last Premier’s Cup graduate to go on and win the Newcastle Gold Cup.

In 2024 Etna Rosso won the Newcastle Gold Cup off a lead-up fifth in the Wyong Cup.

The official Newcastle Gold Cup Final Field & Barriers are announced on the Wednesday of race week.

2024 Newcastle Gold Cup Nominations

Nominations for the Newcastle Gold Cup close the Monday of race week.

Newcastle Gold Cup History

Inaugurated in 1898 the Newcastle Gold Cup has an extensive history of prestige. Over time the Newcastle Gold Cup has garnered a reputation as one of the most renowned country cup events in the nation. The reputation is shared by Broadmeadow Racecourse and the Newcastle Jockey Club. Originally a Principal race, the Newcastle Gold Cup was granted Group 2 status in 1980. In 2001, however, the event was downgraded to Group 3, a status it has held since.

The calendar slot the Newcastle Gold Cup occupies ensures that the race attracts a number of top-rated horses each year.

Many of the runners in the Newcastle Gold Cup have plans to contest major Group 1 events further down the track. 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon took out the Newcastle Gold Cup in 2011. 1982 Newcastle Cup winner Gurners Lane went on to win the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double. Bianca, who took out the 2008 Newcastle Gold Cup, went on to place second in The Metropolitan.

Other notable Newcastle Gold Cup winners include Raven’s Plume (1898), Duke Alwyne (1915, 1916), Salazar (1939), Lord Valentine (1941), Mr Mako (1985), Agincourt Express (2001), and Glencadam Gold (2012).

A Newcastle Gold Cup race record was set in 2019 when Gai Waterhouse won the event for the seventh time with Hush Writer who took it out in 2 minutes, 23.25 seconds.

In 2020 Hush Writer just failed to go back-to-back running second to subsequent 2021 All-Star Mile hero Mugatoo, the winner handing local horseman Kris Lees his first Newcastle Gold Cup success.

Trainer Chris Waller posted his fifth Newcastle Gold Cup success in 2022 with that year’s subsequent Caulfield Cup champion Durston and then sixth in 2024 with Etna Rosso adding to the trainer’s top record in the event.

Impressively Gai Waterhouse won the Newcastle Gold Cup for the eighth time in 2023 with Military Mission setting a new the track record winning in 2 minutes 22.40 seconds.
