The Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) is one of six Group races running at Sandown this Saturday, making up Zipping Classic Day which is the final race day of the 2014 spring carnival.
Five of the nine races across the day have had their nominations extended until 10:00am (AEDT) Tuesday morning but the 2014 Summoned Stakes doesn’t need to worry about that after 30 four-years-old and up mares declared for the race on Monday.
Many of the county’s top trainers who have dominated the season have entered horses in their last bid to add another win to their tally, including Chris Waller with a dual-pronged attack in the form of Belle De Coeur and She’s Clean.
Belle De Coeur has failed to place in all three of her spring starts, missing out on a placing in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) by just a nose.
She’s Clean has run at the highest level of racing but hasn’t recorded a win since the Listed June Stakes (1200m) in 2013. She finished powerfully in the Group 3 Nivison (1200m) on October 18 but was nearly one length off the first three, who were just too fast for the six-year-old.
Darren Weir has entered Ava’s Delight for the 2014 Summoned Stakes, who enjoyed back-to-back third placings in minor races during September but finished end of the field when she stepped up in class for the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) and Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes.
The Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness has had a good spring season but unfortunately a win, or even a placing, has eluded her so far. The mare was a fast finishing fourth in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint (1200m) first up, missing out on the win by just under half a length. She then finished fourth once again in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) after charging late, just a nose off third place. Her next start was the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m), in which she moved into the race into the straight and just battled late for fifth place.
The four-year-old made the step up in class last time out for the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m). She settled in front of a few before coming up the middle of the track. She ran well only two lengths away from the winner despite finishing seventh.
Estonian Princess is another mare nominated for the Summoned Stakes coming via the Myer Classic. The Scott Aspery-trained four-year-old finished fifth after following the winner (Bonaria) into the race and running on very strongly. Before this she was runner-up in the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) on October 11, her best result since winning the Group 3 James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) in April.
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Rose Of Choice has finished in the top three her last two times out, including in The Nivison and Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes on Melbourne Cup Day.
