Tycoon Tara proved herself on the back of a Missile Stakes win in the mud going back-to-back at Royal Randwick holding off a strong field to take out the Show County Quality 2016 on a firmer track.
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of Written Tycoon was the stable’s saviour in the Missile Stakes on a Heavy (10) track on August 6 after the scratching of stablemate Capitalist.
How the form of that would stack up on top of the ground was the question, but the in-form six-year-old showed the earlier win was no fluke with a strong late success in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy took over from Blake Shinn in the saddle of Tycoon Tara who connections changed plans with to target the Warwick Stakes Day race after her Missile success.
She took up front running soon after the jump, leading throughout ahead of the returning John O’Shea-trained Vashka in his first race since last spring.
The Kris Lees-trained favourite Le Romain meanwhile moved up to settle fourth on the rails, the Randwick Guineas winner kicking off his four-year-old campaign in the Sydney sprint.
Vashka was travelling well and moved into the lead as the field went around the bend while the Allan Denham-trained Mount Nebo, third in the Missile Stakes last time out, was tracking last.
Inching closer with the inside run, Hard Spun gelding Le Romain looked the winner while Boss Lane – second in the race last year – was also running on late.
Tycoon Tara ($5.50) though went with the favourite and pushed forward to win running away by a length to Le Romain ($4.20) while Mount Nebo ($11) got third in a photo with eventual fourth placegetter Messene ($12).
The Show County Quality winner was too good and too fit, Team Snowden’s mare doing all the work on top of a hot speed, dashing away in a smart performance that could indicate more Group runs this campaign.
“It was no shock to us,” co-trainer Paul Snowden said.
“But it was good to see her do something on top of the ground.
“I think she’s probably more suited to the other day (a wet track).
“But she put them to bed on a good track so we’re all very pleased.”
Snowden said they would touch base with everyone after the win and plan where to next with the mare who, before her back-to-back Randwick wins, was heading for the breeding barn.
