Euro Angel Wins Ladies’ Day Vase

Euro Angel has produced a smart turn of foot in the final straight at Caulfield to win the Group 3 Ladies’ Day Vase (1600m) this afternoon.

Euro Angel was all but forgotten in Ladies’ Day Vase betting markets in the hours leading up to jump, but the mare found an ideal position in transit as Antelucan, Kaniana and Rocket Commander set the early pace.

Caught behind runners rounding onto the final straight, Dwayne Dunn threaded the needle with the daughter of Rip Van Winkle before asking for an extra effort, and the leading hoop was greeted with a big turn of foot.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes was on hand for Euro Angel’s win in the Ladies’ Day Vase but revealed that future plans are yet to be set for the mare this season.

“It was a pretty good win,” Hawkes said after the race.

“To be fair, she was behind (Mark) Kavanagh’s horse (Egypt) and she did have cover, but she was three deep in not a fast-run race and when he peeled off the corner, it was just a matter of how far.

“At the top of the straight I thought she’d have to be good, but she put pay to them.

“If she ran well, there’s bigger and better things. Where she goes now I don’t know, but I don’t care – she’s a stakes winner.”

Dunn delivered a typically strong ride aboard Euro Angel to win the Ladies’ Day Vase and believes she will only improve from the run.

“She’s shown us a lot,” Dunn said.

“Last time I rode her she was just too aggressive at Flemington and she pulled really hard, and didn’t finish.

“That was probably the only chink in her armour. We got a long way back first-up the other day and she finished off well.

“It’s very unusual for Team Hawkes to back them up that quickly – nine days back from Sydney but obviously black type is very important to her, and hopefully that’s changed her life.

“She’s just got to learn to take a step back and be a bit kinder in the run. No doubt 2000m won’t be beyond her.”
