Eleven talented runners have been confirmed in the 2016 Geelong Cup field, to be run at Geelong Racecourse on Wednesday.
Historically used as a final point of call for stayers targeting the Melbourne Cup, the 2016 Geelong Cup field again boasts a number of classy internationals who will make their Australian debuts in the race, including Charlie Appleby-trained stable mates Qewy and Oceanographer.
A notable performer in big staying tests, Qewy should be perfectly-suited to the conditions of the 2016 Geelong Cup first-up and will leave from the ideal barrier 7 with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.
Resuming this year for second in the Ascot Stakes (4023m) on June 14th, the Street Cry gelding confirmed his ticket to Australia when second in the Summer Stakes (2816m) on July 26th.
Oceanographer has posted four wins through his nine career starts so far and could very well receive the run of the race on Wednesday after drawing into the Geelong Cup field in barrier 6.
Placing fourth in the British Racing Stakes (2414m) first-up on May 1st, Oceanographer failed to fire in the Listed Wolferton Handicap (2011m) on June 18th but responded with a classy race win in the Cover Wherever You Work Handicap (2066m) on July 30th.
Having since finished seventh in the Ebor Heritage Handicap (2816m), the Sea The Stars gelding has been charged with carrying only 54kgs in the Geelong Cup and will be partnered by Ben Melham.
Arab Dawn has produced a number of strong performances for Godolphin in 2016, but will undoubtedly require luck in transit on Wednesday after drawing into the Geelong Cup field in the outside barrier.
Debuting in Australia for eighth in a Randwick minor over a mile on February 6th, the Dalakhani gelding responded with a big turn of foot second-up to win the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m).
Progressing to fourth in the talent-rich Listed Canberra Cup (2000m), Arab Dawn returned to the paddock after failing to run on in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) on March 26th.
Resuming this time for tenth in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m), Arab Dawn has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his last start seventh in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) on September 30th.
Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller will launch a multipronged attack on the feature race after confirming both Who Shot Thebarman and Kinema in the Geelong Cup field.
Returning to the paddock after finishing fourth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) in April, Who Shot Thebarman placed sixth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and fifth in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) before placing second to Hartnell in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) on September 17th.
Failing to make up the distance when seventh in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) last time out, the Yamanin Vital gelding will relish a step back in grade on Wednesday.
Kinema is another runner that will have his first Australian start in the Geelong Cup, but has already posted wins in the Al Basti Equiworld Stakes (2816m) and Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (2414m) this year.
