Will the Filly Yankee Rose Win the 2016 Cox Plate?

Her trainer David Vandyke has already conceded to running for third in the Cox Plate 2016 trifecta on Saturday, but does his filly Yankee Rose have what it takes to upset the top fancies in the weight-for-age classic?

Moonee Valley hosts it’s biggest race of the year on the weekend with the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) due to jump at 5:00pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

A final Cox Plate field of 10 hopefuls face off in the in the lucrative major including the reigning champion and odds-on favourite to get the job done again, Winx ($1.95).

Only the best of the best have saluted for the punters in the Cox Plate in recent history with the last favourites to win being Makybe Diva (2005), So You Think (2010) for his second and Winx (2015) last year.

Since So You Think won back-to-back editions, no other Cox Plate winner has backed-up in the race to defend their crown the following year – until now.

Winx is out to continue her incredible winning streak and make it 13 on the trot.

Thirteen looks the magic number for the might mare as if she is successful, she’ll also become the 13th multiple Cox Plate winner in history.

Yankee Rose meanwhile has a big hoodoo to overcome if she is to upset Winx and the other major player Hartnell ($3.70).

The only Cox Plate winning filly to date is Surround (1976).

Few have attempted to join her in recent years, with only four three-year-old fillies lining-up in a Cox Plate field since 1990.

Two of those ran third however with Slight Chance (1992) promoted from her fourth place finish after Better Loosen Up (4th) successfully protested against Let’s Elope (5th); and Samantha Miss (2008) who was the beaten favourite behind Maldivian (1st) and Zipping (2nd).

Saturday is the first Melbourne run for Vandyke’s daughter of All American, Yankee Rose last seen winning the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in Sydney on October 8.

So can she bring that form south and score the upset Cox Plate result carrying the 47.5kg lightweight from barrier one?

Yankee Rose is out to become just the second Cox Plate winning filly in history and the first since Surround (1976)

Why Yankee Rose is a Winning Cox Plate Chance

  • Barrier one produced last year’s Cox Plate winner Winx
  • She is on just 47.5kg at weight-for-age dropping from the 54.5kg she carried to victory last time out
  • Dean Yendall retains the ride and he is now a Group 1 winning jockey
  • Her Spring Champion Stakes win last time out was impressive and three of the past six Cox Plate champions came off a lead-up win
  • A three-year-old (colt) won the Cox Plate only three years ago with Shamus Award (2013) the first maiden to win the race
  • She is already a dual Group 1 winner in just seven starts winning close to $2 million in prize money
  • She is proven over the Cox Plate distance
  • She has the second highest Win Rate (57%) in the field following only Winx (73%)
  • She has an equal Place Rate with Winx (86%), but is far more lightly-raced than the champion mare

Why Yankee Rose Won’t Win the 2016 Cox Plate

  • Only one filly in history has won the Cox Plate and that was back in 1976
  • She is a far better place chance with two of the four fillies that have run in a Cox Plate since 1990 finishing third
  • Yendall is yet to ride a Cox Plate winner
  • Vandyke is yet to train a Cox Plate winner
  • Yankee Rose has never raced in open-age company with all seven of her starts against her own age group
  • She has no experience in Melbourne or the Moonee Valley track under race conditions
  • #8 Winx ($1.95) and #3 Hartnell ($3.70) will prove hard to beat
