Thoroughbred Trainers

Thoroughbred trainers are the individuals who truly define the term ‘horse racing professional’. One has to immerse oneself deeply in order to achieve real success as a trainer of thoroughbred horses, and the men and women who make it to the top are guaranteed to have an incredibly vast knowledge of thoroughbreds in particular and horse racing in general.

The two most common career paths to becoming a thoroughbred trainer are either a career as an amateur (or even professional) jockey or joining the family business. It is not surprising that thoroughbred training is often a family affair running over several generations, considering the requirements in terms of property to maintain training stables and the benefits of passing on knowledge first-hand.

Most trainers will spend several years working as an assistant trainer to a more experienced veteran before obtaining their own training license and either opening their own training facility or taking over as the new head trainer at an existing family training facility.

Thoroughbred trainers rely a great deal on their reputation. Owners hire trainers to prepare their thoroughbreds for races based on the performances of previous trainees, so a trainer without winners will be hard pressed to find new charges. As it takes time to build such a reputation, most trainers go through quite a few hard years before their business takes off, meaning that a true passion for the sport is absolutely essential, rather than a love of money.
