Melbourne Cup 2024 Talks for Brisbane Cup Winner Alegron
Talks of the first Tuesday of November now surround former Godolphin galloper Alegron who could be set for a Melbourne Cup bid this spring after his barnstorming two-mile triumph in Saturday’s 2024 Brisbane Cup results.

The now Bjorn Baker-trained stayer was snared for just $40,000 in a sale by Godolphin last November due to needing a throat operation.
He showed what a bargain buy that was with his impressive Group 2 $400,000 Brisbane Cup (3200m) success at Eagle Farm.
The five-year-old son of Teofilo improved on his lead-up second in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2400m) at the track a fortnight back to win over further and put his hand up for a potential shot at the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington later in the year.
Alegron showed huge potential as a three-year-old running top four in a host of Group 1 races including his 2021 Victoria Derby second and third in the 2022 ATC Derby.
He proved a bit of a flop in the spring of 2022 when 15th in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and has been unraced in Group 1 company since.
That could change over the coming months with Baker and the team likely to put together a spring preparation targeting the staying majors based off his dominant performance in Brisbane.
“He’s been a fantastic horse since Bjorn bought him relatively inexpensively,” Baker’s stable rep Jim Clark told the media post-win.
“He’s had a really good prep and his run the other day put the writing on the wall.
“They were very confident he’d be strong at the end of two miles.
“They ran along nicely and it was a really cool ride from Dylan. Great result.
“Each run he has kept improving physically. I thought he looked a million dollars today. Stepping up to the two miles is the key.
“(The Melbourne Cup) It’d be a great story — an online purchase and one that could get to a Melbourne Cup after a wind operation.
“Bjorn has had very good luck with that.”
Apprentice Dylan Gibbons gave the surprise Brisbane Cup winner a peach of a ride with Alegron ($8) eventually crossing 1.32 lengths ahead of the luckless favourite Mostly Cloudy ($2.25F) who failed to get a clear run throughout before getting out too late.
In third narrowly beaten was Captain Envious ($10) who retained his minor placing after a protest by connections of fourth past the post Warning were dismissed, but reportedly broke down in after the finish in a sad turn of events according to his hoop Mark Zahra.
Viewed (2008) was the last horse to complete the Brisbane Cup – Melbourne Cup double.
