As one of three Group 1 Melbourne Cup Carnival races held on Stakes Day the Saturday after the iconic Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November annually, the Champions Mile tips are some of the most popular with punters every spring.
Each year the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) – formerly known as the Kennedy Cantala – attracts a star-studded field of the season’s best milers and the showdown takes place at Flemington Racecourse in early November.
As soon as the Champions Mile Field is released the Wednesday before Champions Stakes Day, punters are keen to uncover the winning Champions Mile tips.
2024 Champions Mile Tips
Our exclusive 2024 Champions Mile tips will be published below as soon as the final field and betting odds from Ladbrokes.com.au are released the week of the race.
- To Win: #1 Mr Brightside ($5.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Great edition of the Champions Mile with plenty of winning hopes including Broadsiding back to 1600m who looks a danger but going to stick with Mr B who is deserving of a return to the winner’s stall. His Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes victory at this track and trip in Heavy going earlier this prep was sensational and he’s been far from disgraced without winning when up against the best of the best all campaign. Latest run had him finishing off strongly behind the incredible eight-length champ Via Sistina when fourth the Cox Plate (2040m). This Team Hayes-trained marvel keeps giving, he’ll relish coming back to 1600m, has a lovely record at Flemington, and is drawn to win in gate four. Back on him.
2024 Champions Mile Lead Up Races
Checkout the Champions Mile Form Guide for the lead-up form the runners in the mile feature have come out of. The best guides to the Champions Mile Results in recent history have been the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) and the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
Mr Brightside (4th in 2024) was the last Champions Mile winner to come off a run in the Cox Plate.
2024 Champions Mile Favourite
The Champions Mile favourites have been moderately successful for punters in the past decade or so, so tipping the shortest-priced runner in the Champions Mile betting markets each spring is a good tip.
From 2008 – 2015 three of the eight favourites in the Champions Mile odds got the job done.
During that time there were also a number of upset Cantala Stakes (now Champions Mile) results from longer-priced winners including Albert The Fat ($16 in 2011), All American ($40 in 2009) and Tears I Cry ($101 in 2007) who won at triple-figures!
Exotic Champions Mile Bets
Exotic Champions Mile bets are more complex than simple win, place and each-way bets. However, they do offer longer odds and are therefore more lucrative when your selections come through.
Exotic Champions Mile bets include trifectas, quinellas, exactas and First Four bets. All of these bets require you to choose more than just the winner, which makes them more difficult to pick and so they get longer odds. Check out our dedicated Champions Mile Betting section to learn more about how to bet on the Champions Mile.

Race comments
Fantastic race. FANGIRL (10) is interesting. She struggled off the hot tempo set by PRIDE OF JENNI last time out but hits this race fourth-up and fresher than most. She was given far too much to do when fourth in this race last year, and there's a chance she gets a more comfortable tempo to show her turn of foot this time. MR BRIGHTSIDE (1) has had five runs this time in and continues to front up and run well. 1600m suits, it's just whether he's over the top. PRIDE OF JENNI (9) loses regular rider Declan Bates who has managed her very well. It'll be interesting to see how fast Melham goes in front. She's had some tough runs of late and could be needing a break, but she's hard to write off because she's outstanding when on. ANTINO (4) was enormous in the Toorak and does relish the 1600m. One for the multiples.
