Myer Classic 2013 Odds – Red Tracer Firm Favourite

The Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer has opened close to odds-on favourite in 2013 Myer Classic betting for the mares-only classic on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington this weekend.

Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) drew 14 hopefuls at acceptance stage on Wednesday and is set to run as Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST) on Saturday.

To wear the number one saddlecloth and jump from gate 10 with Nash Rawiller aboard is Waller’s Group 1 winning Dane Shadow mare Red Tracer.

This time last year she could only manage to run 10th to Appearance in the Myer Classic, an effort the bookies are certain she can improve on with Red Tracer leading Myer Classic betting at a short $2.10.

She’s got a double digit gate to overcome but a mile to do it in.

Last start the six-year-old won the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on October 19 and did it from barrier 9.

While last-start winners have a woeful record in the Myer Classic, Red Tracer is definitely the class horse here proven by her Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) success in Brisbane back in June.

Just two of her rivals are also under double figures in the Myer Classic odds with:

  • #2 Fire Up Fifi ($7.50) – Rails draw for Rob Heathcote’s Queensland-trained mare enjoyed a win in the Rose Of Kingston Stakes over the 1400m at Flemington two back as a $21 outsider, backed up from that at Caulfield on Cup Day and were fifth to Red Tracer in the Tristarc, needs to improve but think going up to the mile with her last start over the distance producing a black type win at Eagle Farm during the winter
  • #4 Sharnee Rose ($9.50) – Early money coming for the Kris Lees-trained Nadeem mare making them the Myer Classic market mover, after win number three from as many starts, two back defeated Red Tracer as a $51 roughie when they ran one-two in the Golden Pendant at Rosehill, Randwick last start win in the Angst Stakes over the mile, trainer isn’t 100 percent confident will be the shortie in the market again here but earned their shot at the Melbourne Group 1

Just outside the bookie’s Myer Classic trifecta is then Waller’s other runner Catkins ($12) who is also drawn wide one outside their favoured stablemate Red Tracer with gate 11.

The grey Dubawi four-year-old’s form is very good too.

She won the How Now Stakes in September at Caulfield before a third to Fire Up Fifi in the Rose of Kingston.

Last Saturday ran at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and enjoyed a win over Cameo, carrying 59kg, in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes over the mile.

Other notable hopes with genuine claims at juicy prices then include the Peter Moody-trained Tattersall’s Tiara third placed Floria ($13) from last season, the in-form Zabeel mare Zonza ($14) who won over the Caulfield mile in a black type on 1000 Guineas Day and even Phillip Stokes’ Adelaide mare Molto Bene ($18) looking to improve on her 10th in the Tristarc.

The Morphettville-based Stokes said Molto Bene was never in the Tristarc from barrier 16 and going up to the mile at Flemington will suit.

“We always thought she’d be better back at Flemington, she’s done well since,” he told Adelaide Now.

“She can pull off the sectionals, like she did when she won (two starts ago at Flemington in the Pairs Lane).

“She’ll definitely be in the mix.”
