Victoria Derby odds are some of the most sought-after Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival markets each year and are those prices offered on the runners and potential runners in the $2 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Held on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which takes place on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup, the Victoria Derby is a staying showdown for the season’s best long-distance three-year-olds.
When checking out the current year’s Victoria Derby odds on your selections, make sure you consider the Victoria Derby form guide and betting history for tips on who to back and who to sack.
For example, since 2006 there has been just four Victoria Derby favourites to salute for the punters with Tarzino (2015), Ace High (2017), Hitotsu (2021), and Riff Rocket ($2.20 in 2023).
A number of Victoria Derby winners in the past decade have also jumped at double and even triple figure starting prices in the Victoria Derby odds for example Fiveandahalfstar ($41 in 2012) and Rebel Raider ($101 in 2008).
Futures Victoria Derby Odds
Futures or ante-post Victoria Derby odds are those all-in Victoria Derby betting markets open at bookmakers including Ladbrokes.com.au before the official Victoria Derby field is released.
The prices on offer are for possible runners and until they are confirmed for the race, their Victoria Derby odds are usually very generous.
There are no guarantees and no money back however, so if the horse you back in the pre-field Victoria Derby markets doesn’t run, you don’t get any return or refund.
Still, it can be worth checking out early pricing on proven gallopers that run well in traditional Victoria Derby lead-up races like the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) held a week earlier, which produced recent VRC Derby winners in Tarzino (3rd in 2015) and Prized Icon (5th in 2016).
The early Victoria Derby odds open weeks in advance of the race so keep an eye out this spring.
Where to Get the Best Victoria Derby Odds
The best Victoria Derby odds each spring are those found online at a trusted online bookmaker like Ladbrokes.com.au.
Online bookies offer more competitive pricing on all Australian Group 1 races and also provide a comprehensive Victoria Derby form guide near the markets giving you an even better chance of picking the spring’s Victoria Derby winner.
Sportsbooks like Ladbrokes.com.au also run exclusive Victoria Derby betting promotions and offer boosted odds for customers.
Race comments
The G1 Victoria Derby. It looks an open race. EL CASTELLO (1) comes here on the quick backup having won the G1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick last week. He's given no indication he won't run a strong 2500m, he just needs a good ride early from the draw. If he doesn't fire, something at big odds wouldn't shock. OXFORD BLUE (14) is one of those. He was backed off the map to win the Geelong Classic and looked to be outsprinted when racing on a slow speed. Have a feeling he'll relish a proper test, as will SCARY (13). He ran on strongly over 1800m here in the Super Impose two back before copping a farcical tempo in the Caulfield Classic. Happy to forgive that. KEENELAND (3) won the Super Impose nicely before a narrow defeat at Caulfield. No knocks. RED ACES (2) got the job done last week at Moonee Valley and should appreciate the trip on the quick backup.
