Race comments

Open race. ROYAL CHAMPION (7) was just fair at his Australian debut in the Paris Lane at Flemington but was off a long spell at a trip short of his best with 61kg and the market kept him quite firm which is notable. He drops 4kg here, gets to a mile and his best form in the UK would just win this. UNCLE BRYN (1) was a surprise winner of the Paris Lane at $61 but it wasn't anything he hadn't shown he was capable of prior. He'll only be better suited out to a mile and can win again. PLENTY OF AMMO (11) stuck on well for second in the Paris Lane and will be fitter. She's got the record of a very good horse and maps well out to a mile. NUGGET (4) was okay in the Epsom and will find this much easier. POISON CHALICE (8) is progressive and can measure up.

Worth $300,000 in prize money, the weight-for-age showdown attracts a strong group of milers which can tackle the 1600m distance. Many of these horses will come via the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and will go on to compete in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m). Turn Me Loose (2015) was the last horse to complete the Crystal Mile – Cantala Stakes (now the Champions Mile) double.

The 2023 Crystal Mile form was franked with the second placed Antino returning the following year to win the 2024 Toorak Handicap by a dominant 6.5 lengths!

The Crystal Mile is one of a host of Group status races held at The Valley at the meeting that is headlined by the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).

The 2022 Crystal Mile form was franked with the winner My Oberon returning in the autumn to finish runner-up to Mr Brightside in the 2023 Doncaster Mile in Sydney.

The 2024 Crystal Mile took place on Saturday October 26, 2024 as part of Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley and saw the well-backed mare Plenty Of Ammo ($3.90F) salute as favourite by three quarters of a length.

2024 Crystal Mile Tips

  • To Win: #6 Suparazi ($12 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Think the current double-figure odds on this consistent Super One six-year-old from Wangaratta can upset this field and continue his good spring form. The Ben Brisbourne-trained galloper was last seen running second to Jimmysstar in the Listed Weekend Hussler from a wide draw at Caulfield on Guineas Day. He is up in distance and trip going to a Group 2 now but presents fit and should relish the mile (5:2-0-1). Hasn’t finished out of the top three in his latest five, and while he hasn’t won at The Valley his is a four-time runner-up from eight starts so handles the tight turns. Jye McNeil rides from barrier eight. Can surprise.

2024 Crystal Mile Field

The Crystal Mile field draws some of the top weight-for-agers currently engaged in their spring campaign. Good lead-up races into the Crystal Mile field include the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) run at Caulfield the weekend before or the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) for gallopers looking to come back down in class and distance.

The 2024 Crystal Mile field and barriers are released on the Wednesday of race week and will be published in full below as soon as announced by the Moonee Valley Racing Club.

The Crystal Mile 2024 final field features eleven acceptors led in betting by the Ciaron Maher-trained Nugget coming off a 12th in Sydney’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap and Anthony & Sam Freedman’s import Royal Champion racing second-up in Australia.

2024 Crystal Mile Nominations

Nominations on the Crystal Mile in 2024 are taken on the Monday of race week.

Crystal Mile History

First raced in 1982 and won by Getting Closer, the Crystal Mile was originally titled the “Waterford Crystal Mile” however in 2007 it changed sponsors and is now named the “Patinack Farm Crystal Mile”. Originally a Listed race, the Crystal Mile was elevated to Group 3 status in 1986 and became a Group 2 race in 1997.

The event has only been won twice by one horse named Weasel Will in 2000 and 2001. 1 minute 33.2 seconds is the record for the fastest winning time (since 1988) by Ark Regal in 1990 whereas Niconero holds the slowest time record for his 2005 win with 1 minute 39.4 seconds.
