Held at Caulfield Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Herbert Power Stakes is a highly regarded lead up race to both the Caulfield Cup back at the track / distance the following weekend and Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
The Herbert Power Stakes winner is exempt from Caulfield Cup ballot, and the double was last completed by Master O’Reilly in 2007. Despite being considered a key Melbourne Cup lead-up, no Herbert Power Stakes winner has gone on to win the two-mile classic in the same year since Rogan Josh in 1999.
The mile and a half event offers $300,000 in total prize money and is a key support act on Caulfield Guineas Day at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne.
The Herbert Power Stakes shares a race program a host of other Group races including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) which is currently run as the Might And Power, Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), and the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m).
In 2023 the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission became the first horse since Unsolved (1995) to come via a run in Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) improving on a fourth to stablemate Just Fine to win the Herbert Power Stakes.
The 2024 Herbert Power Stakes ran on Saturday October 12, 2024 and was won in an upset by the Ciaron Maher-trained Herman Hesse ($16) who does not hold a nomination for either the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup this spring.

2024 Herbert Power Stakes Tips
Stay tuned for our exclusive Herbert Power Stakes 2024 Tips on the Caulfield Cup lead-up this spring.
- To Win: #4 Gear Up ($5.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Open edition of the Herbert Power with plenty of Spring Cup-bound stayers ready to make their presence known including Gear Up who looks ready to fire now third-up off two good placings. The Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald trained Teofilo grey was a devastatingly close third in a blanket Group 3 Naturalism Stakes finish here last time out over 2000m. That form looks strong, in with the same weight, and has previously won at a mile and a half. Can win in a tight finish this time.
2024 Herbert Power Stakes Field
The Herbert Power Stakes field attracts a quality line-up of spring sprinters each season, many looking for the ballot exemption into the following weekend’s Caulfield Cup field. Good lead-up races into the Herbert Power Stakes field include the Listed JRA Trophy (2500m) at Flemington in mid-September and even the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) just seven days earlier.
Each year the Herbert Power Stakes field attracts a field of genuine stayers heading towards the Spring Cup races, many of the runners having previous experience in Group 1 company and over the mile and a half distance.
The Herbert Power Stakes field 2024 and barriers are set for release on the Wednesday of race week and will be published in full below once announced by Racing Victoria.

Race comments
GEAR UP (4) has run well at both runs back and hits this third-up and ready to fire. The form out of his first two starts reads well and the 2400m shouldn't pose an issue for him now. He can roll forward and prove tough to get past. POST IMPRESSIONIST (3) ran well fresh behind Horrifying before a poor one in the Archer, perhaps not suited on the wet ground. He's a talented stayer and can bounce back. LE DON DE VIE (1) wasn't bad fresh in the Naturalism and will be fitter. He's certainly good enough to win this. FANCY MAN (6) was big odds in the Naturalism but wasn't beaten far and 2400m will be up his alley.
