The Run to the Rose is a 1200 metre sprint held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney in early September as a lead-up to the Golden Rose Stakes.

Open to horses aged three years old and run under set weights plus penalties conditions, The Run to the Rose is a genuine test of sprinting ability and tends to display some of the best talent on the Sydney circuit. With a total prize pool of $300,000 the race attracts plenty of great young horses from renowned stables looking for bigger spring targets over the coming weeks.

The Run to the Rose is now contested on a spring race card featuring two other Group 2 status races – the Theo Marks Stakes and the recently upgraded Sheraco Stakes.

The Run to the Rose is a major lead up event to the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), one of Sydney racing’s main events and worth $1 million prize money. The Golden Rose runs a fortnight later at Rosehill and usually contains quite a few horses that previously participated in the Run to the Rose. It is definitely worth watching the lead up race in order to get an idea of how the field interacts and to gauge form for the Golden Rose.

Astern (2016) followed by Bivouac (2019) are the latest horses to complete the Run To The Rose – Golden Rose Stakes double.

In 2020 the Run To The Rose form was franked when the runner-up Ole Kirk went on to win the Golden Rose Stakes, while North Pacific ran third in the Group 2 and second in the Group 1.

The 2021 Run To The Rose winner Anamoe went on to run second in that year’s Golden Rose results before a win in Melbourne’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m). Anamoe also ran a devastatingly close second in that year’s Cox Plate at The Valley, and won the following year’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Further franking the 2021 Run To The Rose form was the runner-up In The Congo who won the Golden Rose next start.

The 2022 Run To The Rose winner In Secret franked the form with a next-up Golden Rose second before her Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) win over the boys at Flemington that Melbourne Cup Carnival. She also returned the following autumn to win the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap in 2023 at Flemington.

The 2023 Run To The Rose form was franked with the winner Cylinder rounding out that year’s Golden Rose Stakes trifecta placing third before a return in the autumn of 2024 to win Flemington’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

The Run To The Rose 2024 took place on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens as a lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Rose and was won in a stylish first-up upset by the James Cummings-trained Traffic Warden ($8).

2024 Run to the Rose Nominations

The Run To The Rose 2024 nominations are taken on the Monday of race week and traditionally attract three-year-olds coming off lead-up Sydney runs in races like The Rosebud or San Domenico Stakes.

Run to the Rose History

The Run to the Rose was inaugurated in 2003, with Gilded Youth taking out the first edition of the race. Originally called the Monakea 3YO Quality Handicap, the race changed name in 2005 for a year to the Smithfield RSL Club Handicap. From 2006 onwards, it has been known as The Run to the Rose. A listed race from the outset, the Run to the Rose was upgraded to Group 3 in 2007. In 2015 it was upgraded to a Group 2 event and has retained that status since.

For much of its early years the Run to the Rose was run over 1300 metres, however the distance was reduced to 1200 metres from 2011 onwards. The Golden Rose is 1400 metres.

Notable Run to the Rose winners include Eremein (2004), El Cambio (2007), Pierro (2012), Astern (2016) and the latest to go on and win the Group 1 Golden Rose – Bivouac (2019).
