The $1 million Winx Stakes (1400m) is a Group 1 event held at Royal Randwick Racecourse each August upgraded and renamed in honour of the world's best mare from the Warwick Stakes.
The Winx Stakes – formerly the Warwick Stakes – is now a Group 1 race after being upgraded from its previous Group 2 status for the first time in 2018 and renamed in honour of the world’s best mare – Winx.
The Royal Randwick race is held at the very start of the esteemed Sydney Spring Racing Carnival giving Sydney bragging rights to the opening Group 1 race of the spring since the upgrade. The feature event of Winx Stakes Day, the race is run over 1400m under weight-for-age conditions and the prize money is currently set at $1,000,000 as of 2023.
Runners in the Winx Stakes may have previously competed in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1100m), another weight-for-age event at Randwick two weeks prior. So, it is always a good tip to watch for the dominant horses in these earlier weight-for-age events as an indication for your Warwick Stakes bets.
The race’s now namesake Winx won the race first-up in 2016, again in 2017 and then became a three-time champion of the event in 2018 shortly before she retired from racing.
Winx Stakes entries may progress on to the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) in two weeks’ time if they are looking for a middle distance WFA event, the double completed by Winx in 2017.
The Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m WFA) previously held in September is also an option for Winx Stakes graduates and Winx won both races three times on the trot from 2016-18. The Warwick Stakes / George Main Stakes is a popular betting double at the carnival and other horses to claim victory in both races include Lonhro (2003) and Defier (2002).
In 2023 the George Main Stakes moved to October on The Everest Day and was renamed the King Charles III Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller of Winx fame has dominated the Winx Stakes results winning the event formerly known as the Warwick Stakes for a record sixth time in 2020 with his classy mare Verry Elleegant who went on to win that year’s Caulfield Cup.
Waller and Verry Elleegant narrowly missed out on another win in 2021 finishing second to Mo’unga. Verry Elleegant went on to the 2021 Melbourne Cup that spring.
The 2022 Winx Stakes form was franked with the winner Anamoe going on to win three straight Group 1 races that spring including the Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Anamoe also returned in the autumn of 2023 completing the Group 1 Chipping Norton – George Ryder Stakes double.
Waller enjoyed his record seventh Winx Stakes win in 2022 with the previous year’s runner-up Fangirl.
The 2023 Winx Stakes ran at Randwick on Saturday August 19, 2023 offering $1 million in stakes for the first time and was won by the Chris Waller-trained Fangirl ($5) first-up who atoned for her second to Anamoe in 2022.

Outstanding edition of the Winx Stakes with plenty of stars resuming as live wire chances for the win, but for value Think It Over at double figures is hard to go past. Kerry Parker’s evergreen eight-year-old loves this track (19:8-2-3) and has an imposing 50% winning strike-rate fresh (8:4-2-0). He races for the first time since beating Zaaki home in the mud in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) back in April of 2022 and makes his much-awaited return to racing here. No doubt he’ll be better over further getting back into the swing of things, but the 1400m first-up also suits. He won the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at this track and distance by nearly three lengths first-up last time in. Was sixth in the Winx Stakes back in 2021 only 0.66 lengths beaten. Has been the picture of consistency at the highest level prior to his lengthy let-off and plenty suggests he can win here.
The Winx Stakes field attracts a line-up of smart Sydney Spring Racing Carnival middle-distance hopefuls, many kicking off their campaigns with an eye on other upcoming Group 1 events including the King Charles III Stakes (formerly the George Main Stakes).
Formerly the Warwick Stakes field, the race is now run as a Group 1 and known as the Winx Stakes with final acceptances closing the Wednesday of race week.
The official Winx Stakes 2023 final field and barriers will be made available below once announced.
The 2023 Winx Stakes final field features a star-studded line-up of resuming stars including Annabel Neasham’s star nine-year-old Zaaki resuming in gate eight, last year’s runner-up Fangirl chasing her first victory since the 2022 Vinery Stud Stakes, and the Kerry Parker-trained Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner from 2022 Think It Over.

The Winx Stakes (formerly the Warwick Stakes) has a long and rich history dating back to its inaugural race in 1923 when Sunburst won. It started out as a principal race run over seven furlongs and the distance was converted to 1400m in 1972. Not long after in 1979 the event reached Group 2 status, one year before the mighty Kingston Town won his first of an eventual three successive Warwick Stakes in 1980. For one year in 2001 the race distance was decreased to 1300m and the event was not held in 2007 due to the equine virus.
The Winx Stakes received an upgrade to Group 1 status for the first time in 2018 and was also renamed in honour of the 2016-18 winner, champion mare Winx.
Winx Stakes history continued for Chris Waller in 2020 with the master horseman winning for the sixth time as Verry Elleegant beat home stablemate Star Of The Seas in a thrilling photo finish.
Verry Elleegant returned to run second as the beaten favourite behind Mo’unga in 2021 in a race marred by the fatal fall of Brandenburg.
Many quality horses have graced the Winx Stakes and notable winners include Anamoe (2022), Winx (2016-18), Racing To Win (2008), Lonhro (2003 & 2001), Sunline (1991), Super Impose (1991 & 1990), and Groucho (1989).

She won the event in 2016 and 2017 when it ran as the Warwick Stakes before her third victory in 2018 in the race then renamed in her honour. |
