Saturday sees the third edition of the $2 million Five Diamonds steal the show in Sydney and it is a wide-open showdown scheduled at Rosehill.
A bumper field of the season’s top five-year-old racehorses take to the track for the 2024 Five Diamonds over 1800m and there’s already a couple of scratchings from the event that now holds Listed status.
Desert Lightning came out soon after final acceptances after drawing the outside alley in the 14-starter field.
Then, the Harry Eustace-trained UK raider Docklands was withdrawn in favour of a run down south in the $3 million Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) against eight-length Cox Plate winning mare Via Sistina at Flemington.
That brings in the first two emergencies with Major Beel ($23) and the in-form Gavin Bedggood-trained Kingswood ($9.50) assured runs in the updated Five Diamonds field.
Sitting top of the latest Five Diamonds betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Territory Express paying $4.60 for the win.
The Paul Niceforo-trained Kembla Grange galloper is third-up and fit coming off two solid lead-ups including a second in the Prelude behind Iknowastar in a photo-thriller at Randwick last month.
Drawn well in gate seven for apprentice Zac Lloyd, the only question is the horse’s Rosehill record with Territory Express having had four previous starts at the track for just the one second placing.
Second elects in Five Diamonds markets online at an equal $7 quote are Attrition for Mitchell Freedman and Yellow Brick.
Attrition jumps from a good gate five draw with Ethan Brown coming aboard the Churchill entire whose latest run produced a Group 2 Hill Stakes win at this track over Kovalica.
Yellow Brick was also good in his lead-up run with The Mission gelding having run fourth only a length back in the Five Diamonds Prelude.
Other five-year-olds at single figure Five Diamonds odds this spring include the rails-drawn Prelude winner Iknowastar ($9) chasing the double and the Chris Waller-trained Lindermann ($9) to be ridden by Joao Moreira.
Lindermann also comes off a last start triumph with the former Rosehill Guineas winning son of Lonhro back in form taking out Randwick’s Group 3 Craven Plate (1800m) on October 26.
The 2024 Five Diamonds is set to run as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEDT) on Saturday’s 20-race card.

Race comments
Quality edition of this race. ATTRITION (1) took a while to find form but it came last start when he dug deep under siege to hold out Kovalica in the 1900m Hill Stakes at this track. That was his first try beyond a mile and he lapped it up. The one to beat again. Derby winner MAJOR BEEL (15) is being kept to shorter trips this prep. Ran a cheeky race in the Chelmsford won by Fangirl three back but has since struggled in the two elite mile races at Randwick. Back a level today and if Tim Clark can control things he might be tough to catch at a big price. LINDERMANN (3) is in the mix after he dug deep to just get home in the 1800m Craven Plate at Randwick last start. Still has room to improve at the third run back from a spell. TERRITORY EXPRESS (11) is back in fine shape and will be storming home.
