2024 Golden Rose Stakes Results: Broadsiding Beats Traffic Warden First-Up in Godolphin Quinella

It was a momentous 2024 Golden Rose Stakes result for the Godolphin stable with two outstanding James Cummings-trained colts fighting it out in a thriller that saw Broadsiding salute first-up over Traffic Warden.

History was made in this year’s Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) with former champion juvenile Broadsiding becoming the first horse to take out the event first-up as a three-year-old.

“He’s by Too Darn Hot, he’s a European-bred horse with a European style…he was in the right race fresh-up,” winning trainer Cummings told Sky Thoroughbred Central after the win.

“He’s a champion from last season, steps right on the turf as a three-year-old and claims a Group 1.

“It’s a pretty impressive achievement for a colt to do.”

The beautifully bred son of Too Darn Hot came into his own last prep when claiming the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) and the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) over a mile.

Fresh he looked fantastic in the yard at Rosehill and proved his champion status to win after coming off the fence when the gap presented to charge home and deny stablemate Traffic Warden victory in a blur or Royal Blue silks.

“Two big colts today in a proper race letting down to fight it out in a race like the Golden Rose is a huge moment in their careers,” Cummings said.

“They’re two horses I feel like are going in different directions, but they are two class horses.

“Their performance was outstanding.”

Jockey James McDonald took his Group 1 tally to 99 winning rides timing his run on the heavily backed favourite to perfection.

He had the room to move off the fence early but opted to stick to the inside before making his move on the straight.

Once in the clear Broadsiding ($2.15F) showed plenty of authority coming down the outside with 300m to go and quickly closing the gap on the front runners.

After claiming the leader Storm Boy, Traffic Warden and Broadsiding fought it out over the final 100m in a two-horse showdown.

It was Broadsiding however who just drew clear to salute for the punters when launching late to savage the line by a head bob.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained 20/1 outsider Mayfair ran a slashing third ahead of his stablemate Storm Boy who held for a brave fourth under a length beaten.

The Golden Rose Stakes winner showed he had the potential to go on and become one of the all-time greats with races like the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12 and the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley on October 26 calling.

Broadsiding is now the clear $2 favourite in all-in 2024 Caulfield Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au available in full by clicking here.

Futures Cox Plate 2024 odds have him at $6 to beat home the older horses at weight-for-age.
